Climate zones and degree days: adjust tertiary decree trajectories

H1, H2, H3 and climate adjustment: a poorly calibrated baseline skews 2030–2050 targets before the first OPERAT declaration.

Sky and weather conditions that influence degree days

A poorly calibrated tertiary-decree baseline skews 2030–2050 targets before the first OPERAT declaration. Climate zone (H1, H2, H3), degree days, and optional climate adjustment are not engineering-firm details: they change how real performance is read. Octowise links each building to these climate references.

H1, H2, H3: stop approximating by hand

France’s climate zone conditions degree days and, ultimately, consumption comparisons between sites. A headquarters in H1b does not have the same heating season as a facility in H3. Typing the zone “by feel” into a spreadsheet introduces a lasting bias, later copied into OPERAT.

Octowise determines the zone from building location, in a dedicated climate module, rather than leaving an uncontrolled free-text field.

Degree days and climate adjustment

Degree days let you adjust the reading of a mild or harsh year. Optional climate adjustment on the tertiary-decree record documents the methodological choice: you know whether the displayed target is raw or adjusted, which avoids committee debates on incomparable figures.

Without degree days, you compare different winters while believing you compare different operations. With poorly assigned degree days, you correct too much or too little. Hence a single reference per building.

  • H1 / H2 / H3 zone derived from location.
  • Degree days to contextualize heating and, where relevant, cooling.
  • Optional climate adjustment, explicit on the record.
  • Climate data reused in the OPERAT pack.

Baseline, targets, declaration

2030, 2040, and 2050 targets rely on a documented baseline. If the baseline ignores climate, the whole trajectory is shifted. The compliance overview flags buildings whose zone or trajectory is still incomplete, before an incomplete XLSX pack goes out.

Engineering firms can still refine. Octowise provides the portfolio backbone so that refinement is not lost in a file version.

Climate, operations, and AI

A “winter” seasonal signature only makes sense if you know which zone you are in. Likewise, a March heating drift does not read the same in H1 and H3. The climate module is therefore not reserved for the regulatory file.

Measuring, declaring, and detecting share the same building geography: address, map, zone, degree days.
